Harborough MP Neil O’Brien is demanding an urgent meeting with Leicestershire County Council to press the council to help find new homes for voluntary groups displaced by the forthcoming closure of Roman Way community centre.
During a recent visit Neil met with the various groups who currently operate out of the centre to understand their needs.
Neil said:
“The County Council have decided to sell off this facility, which is currently home to a number of important voluntary groups. I am pressing them to help find new premises for these different groups, who do so much to help people in need in Harborough.
When I visited recently, I met with Shopmobility and other groups there. Having space that is handy and in the middle of town is very helpful for people with reduced mobility. Shopmobility also have a brilliant garage at Roman Way where they can service and repair people’s mobility scooters.
iCare meals on wheels are based there. They are less in need of a town centre location but do need substantial space for their kitchens.
The county council will need to find a new location for their adult learning services, but HFT learning disability support services also operate out of the centre, and they really benefit from having a handy town centre location.
I have asked for an urgent meeting with the county council on what they can do to help these displaced groups find new premises. But I also appeal to anyone else who can think of a good home for these groups that do so much good for our community.”
