Harborough MP Neil O’Brien has welcomed a significant funding boost which will see over £1.7m pumped into local bus services. The money will ensure the future of many routes, including many rural services.
The recent funding announcement brings the total amount of investment in local bus services to over £3.5m since last year. The investment comes from the Government’s £80m Bus Services Improvement Plan. This comes on top of the Government commitment to extend the scheme for capping single journeys for £2 until the end of October, and £2.50 afterwards.
Commenting, Neil said:
“I have been campaigning for improved bus services for several years now, such as improvements to timetabling and reliability. Earlier this year I held meetings with the two local bus companies who operate in our area, where I raised several issues. I was delighted that they took onboard my points about introducing a half-hourly service along the A6 corridor, covering Market Harborough. Kibworth and Great Glen.
“I have also been raising concerns on behalf of bus users who live in our more rural areas. These rural bus routes are a lifeline for many who rely on these services to get to work, school and appointments. That is why I was delighted to hear that the Government has pumped over £1.7m locally to ensure the future of these routes.
“My campaign for the best possible bus services locally continues; to ensure that vital routes are retained, and timetabling and service levels are improved.”
